Keep Calm And...

Continuing the 40's theme from my previous post, you are no doubt aware of the recent popularity of a contemporary take on this British World War II poster (which, incidentally, my geek-head tells me that the British Government never actually released at the time):

It's been featured everywhere lately, from celebs to coffee mugs!

However, I also really like the parodies that are cropping up:

Something a little bit different!

One of my "geek things" is the 1940's, or to be more specific, Britain's Home Front during World War II - the people left at home while the men went off to fight the war and all of the social history that comes with it. I've been asked why this era holds a particular fascination for me many a time, and considering that I'm so interested in it, I find the question strangely difficult to answer.

All I know is that I used to ask my grandparents about the war from a very young age (and listened to the same stories intently over and over), and I used to beg to be taken to the Imperial War museum for a day out... some of you will probably find this all very strange, but as I said, it's my "geek thing", and we all have at least one!

It is without doubt the fashions and hairstyles that I love - it was a time when civillian ladies dressed as ladies and somehow managed to look endlessly elegant, even during the tight grip of rationing when women were forced to improvise the most basic of pre-war necessities. Take tea stained legs complete with eye pencil drawn up the back of legs to give the illusion of silk stockings for example... women found ways around Austerity Britain to look and feel good.

Perhaps it's the sense of community that interests me, with people honestly caring for their neighbours and rallying round to help one another? Perhaps it's nostalgia for a time when (for the most part) people had respect for each other and for other people's belongings. A time when love letters were written and posted every day. When inner-city residents went to bed either in a waterlogged shelter in the back garden or under a reinforced kitchen table. Women entered the workforce and took over jobs previously taken by the fighting men and nothing was ever the same again.

I suspect it's simply because I cannot imagine living through the endless rationing, air-raids, gas masks, blackout, separation and sorrow. Whole schools of children marching to railway stations to be evacuated with teachers to goodness-knows-where for goodness-knows-how-long.... it's difficult to appreciate that this all happened relatively recently, in living memory. A world so far removed from 2010 and all of our luxuries, that I find it all totally fascinating.

I'm aware that we tend to look back on the era with rose tinted spectacles. In reality, nobody was perfect and it wasn't all as cosy as the propaganda liked us all to think. Of course there were spivs out to make a fast shilling or ten, bombsite looters, homelessness and poverty, housewives obtaining extra rations "under the counter", ill-treated evacuees, illegitimate babies, the dreaded telegram boy knocking on the door...

But in spite of all that people got on with everyday life in spite of the extraordinary circumstances that they found themselves in, and made sure that they lived for the moment and made the best of life.

And most, looking back, say that in spite of the hardship and sadness, those days were the happiest that they can remember....

Anyway, it's still my geek thing and I thought I'd indulge myself and share it with you. Normal blog service will resume shortly :)

This week I have mostly been...

... eating. Anything and everything. Hormones strike again! BUT I have managed to resist the Easter eggs that I've bought for my honorary nieces and nephews (my cousins' little ones. I did buy an egg for myself too - which I haven't eaten - but let's gloss over that). Creme Egg ice cream is amazing.

... watching the Oscars. Love the Oscars. I watch it every year without fail. I don't watch it live because I have to be up early for work, but good old Sky+ does the job nicely. I lost the sweepstake though.... I'm an Avatar fan!

... loving the sunshine. It's surprising how much better life is when the sun has his hat on!

... reading. I finished "Twenties Girl" by Sophie Kinsella last Sunday and loved it. It actually made me cry, which I wasn't expecting at all - I'll post a book review at some point. I have all of Sophie's books and I don't think you can beat them for easy, feel-good reads!

... working. Yawn. I know I'm lucky to have a job etc, etc but that doesn't stop me wishing for a big lottery win, hehe!

... worrying about my cousin Mike. He was up in Newcastle from Monday to Thursday being assessed to go onto the organ transplant list. Mike has CF and needs a double lung transplant. The man himself can explain everything far better than I ever could - you can read his rather splendid blog here.

... enjoying some family time. My parents are divorced and live in different towns around 40 minutes (in opposite directions) away from me, and I hate it. Sometimes they seem so so far away - ok I know it's only a car journey away and I can always call them but it's not the same as them being in the same town so I can pop in for a cuppa or a hug.

It's Mother's Day here in the UK today and yesterday my Dad and I went to see my Grandma (Dad's mum) who lives about 2.5 hours away in Derbyshire. We took her some Mother's Day presents and cards and it was lovely. It was great gossiping with Dad in the car and Grandma was on great form, and it goes without saying that I love her to bits. She's going to be 90 in September! xx

I've been a bit down today as I haven't been able to see/speak to my mum. She had plans to see my step-dad's uncle in Dorset so hopefully we'll catch up next weekend. I went to lay some Mother's Day flowers on my Nan & Grandad's grave this afternoon and I'm always a bit emotional afterwards. My Nan and Grandad pretty much brought me up after my parents divorced when I was 12, and I thought of them as a second set of parents. Miss them so, so much!

Happy Mother's Day to all of the mummies out there!

Shopping makes me smile!

Hello! I hope that you are all well and the sun shone for you this weekend!

I thought that I'd let you have a peek at some of my recent purchases... btw I really hate the word "haul". Does anybody else find that the word "haul" to describe a shopping spree really makes them cringe?!

I don't splurge that often to be honest, but I think that these beauties are worth the wait!

I'm sorry if you're sick of hearing about this next product, yes I know it's everywhere but it's new to me and I'm excited :)

First, the Urban Decay Alice in Wonderland Book of Shadows that I purchased online from Debenhams. I must have timed it just right because it was out of stock when I checked my order status the following day.

I'm a sucker for anything Alice-like at the moment, so I love the teapots, cups and swallows on the packaging! The inner packaging is just as beautiful, with flowers, rabbits and deer ambling round the eyeshadows... yes you guessed it, I'm a sucker for pretty packaging full-stop! **hmmm, must have a Benefit fix soon methinks**

Alice in her Wonderland is revealed when you lift the lid... I think this is soo cute!

I love, love, LOVE this product!!! I'm more of a neutrals kind of girl, and being a bit of a magpie I am not adverse to a bit of glitter, so was really happy with the selection in this palette.
The stronger colours are really beautiful though so I can definitely see myself experimenting with these - it'd be criminal not to!

The colours are all duplicates of shadows released by Urban Decay in earlier palettes and/or the two previous Book of Shadows collections, but they have been suitably chosen and re-named for this launch. Luckily I don't own any other UD shadows, liners or UDPP (I usually use ELF's primer) so this was definitely a win-win purchase for me! I'm really impressed with the quality and pigmentation of these too... I can't believe I'd never tried a UD shadow before!

Next, a few little gems that caught my eye in Accessorize:

Ha, can't you just tell that I was still loving teapots and cups?!
An impulse buy, yes, but all is not lost.
I used to love cross stitching (I credit it for helping me to stop smoking) but haven't picked up a needle for.... ooh... five years I'd guess. I've been thinking about digging out some kits and patterns and giving it a whirl again - and I could make these stickers look lovely on some hand-stitched cards!

Another Alice-themed treasure. I think this is adorable!
I'm going to give it to my Mum as part of her Mother's Day present because I know she'll love it... oops, I hope you're not reading this Mum!

This was my first little treat - how cute! I like that it can be used as a bag charm as well as a keyring.

I almost came out with lots of teacup and watch pendants, but restrained myself and eventually chose this because it made me smile every time I looked at it. Definitely the best reason for a purchase!

However THIS is my absolute favourite Accessorize buy:

This made me laugh when I saw it because it's so me!! I love sweets and puddings...
and look, a teapot and cup! Hehe! This practically leapt into my basket all by itself!

And lastly, here is my beautiful Gizmo cat enjoying a snooze in the sunshine today... he never fails to make me smile!

Have a good week my lovelies! xx

Wise words, wise words...

Does anybody remember Baz Luhrmann's "Sunscreen" song? I loved it back in the day, when I was young and carefree (hehe!) and really thought that I knew it all (advice? Who needs advice?!)... ahhh, I miss those days!

I forgot that I had the track on my iPod until yesterday, and with the benefit of hindsight and ageing a few more years, I can really appreciate what great advice it offers.

I apologise in advance that this post is text heavy, but I thought I'd pass on Mr Luhrmann's wise words for you all to enjoy xx

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99...

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience… I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind - you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded.

But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are NOT as fat as you imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts. Don’t put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes you’re behind…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with yourself.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how...

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your life…the most interesting people I know didn’t know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives; some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t,
maybe you’ll have children, maybe you won’t,
maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…
whatever you do, don’t congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else’s.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can… don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own.

Dance…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old... and when you do you’ll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you're 40, it will look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…"

Loving & Loathing... 01.03.10

A couple of weeks ago I tweeted about starting these posts. I love reading other people's "Up & Down" lists so thought I'd finally join the crowd and jot down mine!

Loving...

Gizmo cat.

Call me sad but I love this little fella so much, aww! I'm biased but I think Giz is beautiful. He never used to be a lap-cat at all but he's mellowing in his old age and is now really affectionate, he's so sweet :)

The Urban Decay limited edition "Alice In Wonderland" Book Of Shadows.

Alice In Wonderland was one of my favourite books as a child and when I saw the UD palette with the cute pop-up and Alice-inspired shadow names I knew I had to get one! I ordered mine from the Debenhams website last week and Mr Postman should deliver it tomorrow. I have to admit that I am very excited about it. Also looking forward to the movie... I'm going to see it in 3D!

Lazy Sundays.
I love waking up knowing that the day is mine to spend as I choose, and it doesn't happen too often so I make the most of it when it does.... chilling on the sofa reading a good book with endless cups of tea or watching a good movie snuggled up with Gizmo cat is bliss. Thumbs up for sofa days!

The end of February.
I'm not one to wish my life away but I've always hated February. It's always cold and dark, and spring seems such a long way off... but with March comes the extra summertime hour, yippee!

Loathing...

Emoticons.

:)   :D  :(   ;)   :'(  XD

I use emoticons soooo much and it drives me mad. I didn't jump on the bandwagon for ages (because they annoyed me!) but I can't compose a text these days without automatically popping in a smiley or sad face... must, must, must make a concentrated effort to stop!

Stupid drivers.
Now this is forever THE pet peeve of mine. I am the most placid person you could ever meet but put me behind the wheel of a car and WOAH!!! I turn into the most evil tempered, shouting woman - driving definitely brings out the worst in me! Top driving related hates (in no particular order)

1. Ignorance of speed limits. Although I spend half of my time shouting at other drivers, I consider myself to be a safe driver and I abide by speed limits. I've lost five friends to car accidents so I loathe speeding drivers and people who take stupid selfish risks and overtake into oncoming traffic. Nine times out of ten you catch up with them again so what's the point?!

I also cannot ABIDE those drivers who trundle along doing 40mph on a 60mph road - or even worse - those who do not go above 50mph even though they have modern cars capable of at least twice that. These same drivers then seem to find the accelerator when entering a 30 or 40 mph zone and zoom off doing at least 10mph over the limit!!!

2. People who don't indicate. Especially on roundabouts. Many is the time I've sat there screeching "You ********!!!!!! I could have gone then!!!!"

3. People who hog the middle lane of the Motorway!!!

Mondays.

I still get the Sunday Night Blues! I used to hate Sunday nights when I was at school and still do. Don't get me wrong, I like my job and I'm fine when I get there, but I never want the weekend to end. That's probably why I always seem to update my blog at stupid-o-clock on a Sunday night.... eke the weekend out as much as possible!! Let's not even mention the Monday morning alarm. Urgh.

What are your current loves/hates?

xx
